We are ‘Nature’ Defending Itself. Entangling Art, Activism & Autonomous Zones

2021

The pamphlet is JJ & Isa’s version of the incredible story of the zad (Zone à Défendre – Zone to Defend), our home since six years in Brittany, where an international airport project was due to destroy 4000 acres of of wetlands, farmland and forest.

It was defeated in 2018 after 40 years of struggle but this was not the end of the adventure. Creative direct action merged building revolutionary commoning against the airport and its world bringing farmers and activists together, including designing rituals disguised as demonstrations, occupying a bridge with 500 tractors, 1000 bikes and 20000 people and even building an illegal lighthouse on the site where they wanted to build the airport control tower.

The pamphlet entangles these stories with reflections on the role of art, activism and everyday life in the capitalocene and asks how can we become territory ?

“We Are ‘Nature’ Defending Itself: Entangling Art, Activism and Autonomous zones” is part of the Vagabonds collection of “radical pamphlets to fan the flames of discontent” under Pluto Press and in collaboration with the Journal of Aesthetics & Protest.

We are honoured that our friend and teacher Starhawk blurbed the pamphlet beautifully: “We need stories of victory! We need stories of transformative imagination and wild adventures that somehow succeed against all odds. Jay and Isabelle, as always, think about organizing and activism like nobody else. They’ve given us more than an account–they’ve created a new myth that has the added benefit of being true”.
